ORGANATION: Organ Donation Awareness

Organ donation awareness in Nashik starts with one conversation. ORGANATION, a program of Cosmo People Foundation, helps families understand how organ donation works in India, why a pledge needs your family’s support, and how to register as a donor.

Why organ donation awareness matters

Many people in India are waiting for a transplant, and far fewer organs are available than are needed. One deceased donor can save up to eight lives through organ donation, and tissue donation can help more people. Yet many families have never discussed the subject. Awareness is the first step.

How organ donation works in India

  • Deceased donation: after doctors declare a person brain dead, their organs can be donated, but only with the consent of the family.
  • Living donation: a living person can donate one kidney or part of the liver, usually to a relative, under the rules of the law.
  • The law: organ donation and transplantation in India are regulated by the Transplantation of Human Organs and Tissues Act, 1994.

How to pledge your organs

  1. Talk to your family first. Under Indian law, your next of kin decides at the time, even if you have pledged. A pledge only helps your family to know your wish.
  2. Register online. Indian citizens aged 18 and above can register on the official website of the National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (NOTTO) at notto.mohfw.gov.in.
  3. Keep your donor card safe. Tell your family where it is.
  4. Remind them. Repeat your wish to the people closest to you.

Common myths

  • “Doctors will not try to save me if I am a donor.” Doctors are bound to try to save every life. Donation is considered only after brain death has been declared and the family has agreed.
  • “Organ donation is not allowed in India.” It is legal and regulated.
  • “I am too old or unwell to pledge.” Doctors decide at the time which organs are suitable, so you can still register your wish.

What ORGANATION does

ORGANATION is Cosmo People Foundation’s organ donation and health awareness program. It uses events, awareness drives and open conversations to help families in Nashik and nearby areas understand organ donation and take a decision together. Since 2016, including work before the Foundation was registered, we have held 237+ organ donation and health awareness drives.
